INTERVIEW WITH MARICELA GONZALEZ BY FRANCES FIGART

Maricela Gonzalez Calderon is a receptionist at Latitude 10 Resort. Born in Rivas, Nicaragua, she studied English at a private school with the dream of being a bilingual secretary. Three years ago, when she first came to the upbeat beach town of Santa Teresa with its international feel, she realized she wanted to work in tourism. After working as a receptionist in two different hotels for a couple of years, she recently joined the staff of Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality.

Frances: What is your favorite part of your job? What makes you the happiest and why?

Maricela: My favorite part of my work is that I am meeting people from different countries. What makes me happiest is that I am learning every day.

Frances: Can you remember one of your favorite days at work when something happened that made you feel particularly good about what you do?

Maricela: One of my favorite days in Latitude 10, which at the same time made me sad, was when I had to say good bye to a couple of guests (Billy and Olivia) because they stayed in the hotel for almost two weeks. I became close to them, and when they left the hotel she gave me a shopping bag (I love that bag!) and I felt sad saying goodbye to them. They were really grateful for all my attention and recommendations. That moment I felt happy about what I do.

Frances: What do you feel are the benefits for tourists or travelers who come to stay at an eco-resort or sustainable hotel as opposed to a regular, mainstream accommodation that does not consider sustainability?

Maricela: They learn that a more sustainable world is much easier to achieve than what they think, and they can learn how to do daily sustainable activities. Also, they can feel sure that they are helping the environment just by the fact that they are choosing an eco resort.

Frances: Do you think Latitude 10 benefits from being managed by Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality?

Maricela: Yes I do, because Cayuga is a very professional company and they apply a very professional work code.

Frances: Why do you like working with Cayuga personally?

Maricela: Because I am learning a lot, the work ambiance is very nice and I am gathering very important knowledge for the future.

Frances: If the guests who come in contact with you during their stay could take away one particular feeling about you as a staff member, what would you want them to take away and remember forever?

Maricela: I try to make sure that all our guests feel at home. I would like them to remember me for happily helping them have a great stay, and that I really like what I do. I would like that our guests feel that they have a really good friend here in Santa Teresa in Latitude 10.
