Each year, Earth Day marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.
Forty one years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever. While climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, it also presents the greatest opportunity – an unprecedented opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy now and for the future.
Earth Day 2011 can be a turning point to advance climate policy, energy efficiency, renewable energy and green jobs. Earth Day Network is galvanizing millions who make personal commitments to sustainability. Earth Day 2011 is a pivotal opportunity for individuals, corporations and governments to join together and create a global green economy. Join the more than one billion people in 190 countries that are taking action for Earth Day.
At Latitude 10, guests were very excited to participate in this special day and reduced their carbon footprint by planting trees around their suites and the staff participated in a 2 hour beach cleanup, gathering a total of 5 bags of trash.
Also, each team member made their green promise of the year, a green action that they would keep for the rest of their lives:
Karol: I will stop using harmful chemicals in my laundry.
Mainor: I will not use plastic bags for my groceries.
Luis: I will pick up garbage from the beach every time I go there.
Adriana: No more delivery food, too much garbage!
Maricela: I will always reuse both sides of a sheet of paper.
Ivette: I will be mindful about the water every time I do the dishes
Burgos: I will pick up the garbage that I see on the road.
Macho: I will always keep my eyes open for any leaks and fix them immediately.
Damaris: I will load the clothes washer to full capacity to save energy and water.
